TEDxUniversityofStrathclyde

We have been hosting our Annual Ideas Conference for seven years and during this time we have been fortunate enough to welcome many inspirational thought-leaders, dynamic change-makers and world-renowned experts in several disciplines.

We are known as TEDxUniversityofStrathclyde where the x = independently organised TED event. We host our Annual Ideas Conference as well as several smaller Salon events throughout the year. We invite speakers from all backgrounds and disciplines to share their innovative ideas and life-changing experiences with our global community.

At TEDxUniversityofStrathclyde, we are proud to be a platform where all voices can be heard.

About

Over the past several years, it has been vital for us to highlight speakers who have ideas worth spreading. We have been honoured to host exceptionally talented individuals from all across the globe, inviting them to Glasgow to deliver their motivational messages. During this time we have witnessed those who are at the cutting-edge of research, making technological advances which will positively impact generations to come. We have featured those fighting for systematic change and for climate justice, instilling in our audiences the passion and drive to also make the changes they want to see in the world. TED talks have the power to do this and it all starts with one single idea -Maisie Keogh, Co-organsier TEDxUniversityofStrathclyde 2020/2021

ABOUT TEDx

x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

ABOUT TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.

The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Vancouver, British Columbia. TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self- organized TED-style events around the world, and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.

Meet the TEDxUniversityofStrathclyde Team

Sheik Abdul Malik

Lead Organizer

Sheik Abdul Malik is the Lead Organiser of TEDxUniversityofStrathclyde, and he is a Doctoral Researcher in the department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Malik’s research work involves the use of thin ply carbon fibre in the development of a patented Hybrid Overload sensor technology for Structural Health Monitoring applications.

His drive, determination and vision of delivering an exceptional Annual Ideas Conference saw him single-handedly take on the role of Lead Organiser, planning and executing the 2020 ‘Everything Connected’ TEDxUniversityofStrathclyde main event. His commitment to taking the conference to new hights saw him remain in the role, leading the team and the society as a whole to great successes.

Malik’s favourite TED talk is ‘How craving attention makes you less creative’ by Joseph Gordon-Levitt

“This talk resonates with me as the speaker highlights the need for us all to pay attention rather than to crave attention. As someone who is detail oriented, I find the honesty of the presenter and the subject matter highly refreshing. I would recommend this talk to anyone who is looking to be inspired and to help rediscover their creativity through noticing the little things”.

Maisie Keogh

Co-Organizer

Maisie Keogh is the Co-organiser of TEDxUniversityofStrathclyde and is a Doctoral Researcher in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Maisie’s project focuses on the use of innovative technologies and neuromodulation techniques to improve the rehabilitation of those who have suffered from stroke.

Her passion for powerful and motivating discussions coupled with her enthusiasm for sharing meaningful ideas led to her involvement with TEDxUniversityofStrathclyde. Maisie’s favourite TED talk is ‘How to deconstruct racism one headline at a time’ by Baratunde Thurston.

“This is a thought-provoking and vitally-needed discourse on the structural racism that exists in society today. I found the speaker’s highly accessible, witty and emotional examination of race relations in an age where disparity is perhaps more highlighted than ever, profoundly inspirational”.

Harry Phillips

Head of Marketing & Communications

This is Harry, our Head of Marketing and Communications. Following completion of his Undergraduate degree at Strathclyde, Harry decided to return and undergo a Master’s degree in a different faculty and subject area from his first degree – throwing himself straight in the deep end. This is something he often does and classes these situations as “being way out of my depth”, which he thrives upon and actively seeks. An avid traveller, Harry has partaken in two exchange programmes to the University of Tartu in Estonia and Tianjin Normal University in China in recent years and is applying to work in Europe for 2021. His personal goal is simply to travel the world, tying in with his professional goals of working within Europe and Asia before settling in France

Favourite TED talk and Why: “How to Achieve Your Most Ambitious Goals” by Stephen Duneier is Harry’s favourite TED talk. This is because it demonstrates the importance in goal setting and proves that anything can be possible if you set your mind to it, regardless of how wild and abstract your goals may be. The message in this talk is what Harry believes to be one of the most important messages to keep in mind throughout life and is something he truly believes.

“Having such a strong TEDx organisation at Strathclyde motivated me to join so I could enhance my knowledge and network while gaining invaluable professional experience alongside my studies – it’s one of the best opportunities for students to get involved in at university regardless of their career goals”

Cerys Goodwin

Head of Logistics & Operations

Hiya, I’m Cerys and I’m part of the Logistics and Operation team. I got into designing in my 3rd year of high school and am now studying my hobby. If I’m not designing, I’m usually playing the piano or walking my dog. My experience in hospitality and volunteering lead me to want to explore more options of management and it has, also, become one of my more recent passions however music and drawing will always be my favourites.

My favourite all-time TED talk is The Transformative Power of Classical Music by Benjamin Zander where he talks (and plays) his way around how and why classical music is special to everyone. It’s not some boring music genre, but rather a sound that can make any child happy and even appear on the big screens. I just really like how he portrays the different side to classical music that a lot of people usually miss.

I decided to join the TEDx team because I wanted to know more about how TEDx works, how it runs, and who are the people behind it rather than the ones up on stage. I wanted to try something different, as well, and TEDx has definitely provided me with something challenging but fun.

Mrunalini Deshmukh

Head of Speakers & Curators

Mrunalini is a Master’s in Business Management student at the University of Strathclyde, where she collaborates her passion for management and people. She enjoys having deep conversations by exploring different perspectives.
Mrunalini is an Electronics engineer with a significant amount of Corporate experience. She also has experience in SEO and has done Content writing earlier. Her favorite TED talk is ‘How great leaders inspire action‘ by Simon Sinek.

New to the TEDx University of Strathclyde Speaker’s team in 2020 as a Speaker and Content Manager, she’s excited to bolster up the Speaker Team, organize insightful events and hear from Potential speakers.

Atishay Sinha

Head of Finance & Sponsorship

Hi! I’m currently studying my masters Business Analytics and Consulting at Strathclyde, after graduating here with a bachelor’s in international business with Finance earlier this year. As a long-time tech-junkie, a lot of my hobbies and interests centre around tech and its many uses (and believe me there are many!). For instance, I love fixing up my old laptops, computers and phones and really bringing that glimmer back to those old treasures!

Besides that I’m really into running (except when it’s cold, which is unfortunately most of the time here in Scotland), cooking and hiking. I’ve done quite a lot of different treks both here and abroad, all of which have been a lot of fun! I’d say the same for my cooking, but the results aren’t always as good!
